Our
local zoo closes for 3 months in the winter so hubby and I decided to take our grandson, Emory, on the last day of this season. We love zoos and when traveling we try and visit the local zoo in whatever city we happen to be in. Our zoo is fairly small but clean and nicely kept, I think. While I was photographing the
orangutans someone mentioned that it is too bad these beautiful animals are caged. I had been thinking that myself and mentioned it and we both came up with some
positive things about zoos. I liked one of her rationale best; if we did not have the access to wild animals that zoos offer we would be much less likely to want to save them. Reminds me of the adage "out of sight out of mind".
A pretty Amur leopard...ready for a long winter's nap! Just in from the Detroit Zoo, our new male polar bear, Norton. He's loving this winter weather. And last but certainly not least, Dasa and her daughter, Leela share a goodnight kiss.

Great photos!
Zoos that take good care of the animals are ok by me.
I have a big smile on my face right now looking at your pictures.
Your grandson is adorable. I love his two bottom teeth!
Loved your zoo pictures! Those meerkats are the cutest And so is your grandson!
Michele your grandson is a cutie. Well I guess I'll have to wait till next year to get some zoo photos. I came across some old ones of mine the other day.
I love the last photo you showed.
Oh, what a cutie! I also have mixed feelings about zoos, but I do love a good one. Wish I had a grandson to take along with me. Great photos.
I should have gone to the zoo one more time. I only made it once this past year and we live so close. Your grandson is so cute and precious. Your photos are excellent!
Your pictures are amazing! How do you get such great pictures through that glass? I've never gotten a good picture of Leela!
~Thanks Andy! I couldn't agree more; good care is what matters most!
~Kallen-Glad I could bring a smile. My daughter and grandson currently live with us so that brings lots of smiles (and gray hair!)
~Thanks Shelly-he is a cutie pie!
~Hey Toni! I'm bummed because they now close for the winter but get that they can't afford to keep it open all year now.
~Thanks Carolyn-It is cool to see his reactions to the animals!
~Isn't that the way Linda? We live close too but don't go nearly often enough.
~Meredith-believe me there were lots of duds on the memory card. I did use a circular polrizer though which helps cut the glare from the windows. Also, make sure no one is standing in front of the glass throwing a reflection AND get as close to the glass as possible and shoot at an angle to the glass. These steps should improve your number of keepers.
